"The House of the Romeers"
One of the great hallmarks of Arraial d'Ajuda is the festival in honor of Senhora d'Ajuda, which takes place annually, on the 15th of August.
The festivity, one of the greatest religious phenomena in Northeast Brazil, attracts thousands of people every year. of people to the village.
It has been like this, according to the reports of religious people and chroniclers of the Portuguese colonial period in America, since the 16th century.

Initially, the pilgrimages were organized by people from the villages close to the town of Porto Seguro. After 1764, the urban expansion promoted by the first ombudsmen of the region of Porto Seguro led to the creation of new villages in the region.

This had a direct impact on the organization and execution of the festivities in honor of Senhora d'Ajuda. It was during this period that the Irmandade de N. S. da Ajuda was created, whose appointments were published in 1778, which among its functions was to organize festivities in honor of the Saint.
At the same time, the construction of new settlements, most of them very far from the Igreja d’Ajuda, transformed the festivity into a regional phenomenon and made it necessary to create infrastructures to support devotees.

Within this context, a house was built to accommodate the pilgrims who annually visited the Igreja d’Ajuda.

Although it is not known when it was built, the first mention of it was made in 1805, in a report produced by Captain João da Silva Santos. According to the report, next to the church, "next to the South, there is a good house of Romeiros". Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, with the creation of the village of Arraial d'Ajuda, support for pilgrims was expanded, considering that from then on there were people residing permanently around the church. Support for pilgrims was fundamental for the maintenance and expansion of pilgrimages towards the Igreja d’Ajuda and this allowed the party in honor of the Saint to gain increasing proportions over the centuries.
