Arraial d’Ajuda square is affectionately known as Praça da Igreja. Natural, since over the centuries the entire village of Arraial d'Ajuda was attached to this square and in the care of Nossa Senhora d’Ajuda.
However, the square is named after Marshal-of-the-air Eduardo Gomes. This is due to its importance for Arraial d'Ajuda in the mid-twentieth century.

Eduardo Gomes was an airman and influential Brazilian politician.
he Played important role in World War II, conflict of consequences significant in the region of Porto Seguro.

He was also the creator of Correio Aéreo Nacional and, for this reason, attended for the Arraial d'Ajuda Airfield.
When he came, he brought books and didactic material with him, which he distributed to the population.

For his outstanding performance in front of the Great Controversy and also for leading the National Air Mail, the population at the time decided to name the main square with the name of the then Brigadier Eduardo Gomes, a name that remains until the present day.

An interesting curiosity: the then Brigadier Eduardo Gomes was a candidate for presidency of the Republic and, in his campaign, it was common for supporters of his application to prepare chocolate sweets to help with fundraising campaigns.
For this reason, today our famous sweet is called brigadeiro.
