"JOÃO FOGUETEIRO"
In this house lived Seu João, known in the community of Arraial d'Ajuda as João Fogueteiro.
This nickname came about because he was responsible for the fireworks promoted at popular festivities in Arraial, especially at the feast of the Saint.
For being one of the few residents who had some financial condition due to the sale of bread from his bakery, which operated in this house, João was responsible for the fireworks in the celebrations.
In addition to a bakery, it was also a shop and a bar. Incidentally, the first bar in Arraial d'Ajuda to have a refrigerator powered by kerosene, which allowed you to have cold beer.
João Hasché, one of the first foreigners to arrive in Arraial d'Ajuda to live, in 1973, told us a little of the story: "Joãozinho Fogueteiro was the guy who had a bakery and he was the one who sponsored the fireworks for the saint's party. That's what he called Joãozinho Fogueteiro. The nickname Fogueteiro is because of that. Because he was the one with the most money. He sold bread every day. He had a little money. He bought the rockets and made fun of him there behind the church".
He also said: "Fogueteiro's bakery also sold hard pasta, that thing, half a kilo of beans, there was a trade. (...) Ice would be picked up in Porto Seguro to be able to keep things cold. Only Fogueteiro had one red kerosene fridge, pretty!".
